Sermon on Isaiah 45:1-10
Preacher: Reverend
Scripture: Isaiah 45:1-10 (NIV)
This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name. For the sake of my servant Jacob, of Israel my chosen, I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me. I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me. I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form the light and create the darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.
You heavens above, rain down my righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness flourish with it; I, the Lord, have created it.
Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’? Woe to the one who says to a father, ‘What have you begotten?’ or to a mother, ‘What have you brought to birth?

As we reflect on Isaiah 45:1-10, we are reminded that God is sovereign over all things—nations, leaders, circumstances, and our own lives. He calls whom He wills, He equips those He calls, and He works His purposes even through those who do not acknowledge Him. Our task is not to question His plan but to trust in His sovereignty and submit to His will.
God is also at work in our own lives. He calls us to follow Him, to serve Him, and He equips us for the tasks He sets before us. Let us trust in His equipping, rely on His strength, and walk confidently in the path He has set for us.
Lastly, let us heed the warning of this passage: to quarrel with our Maker is to invite ruin. Instead, let us humble ourselves before the One who is our Creator, and trust that His plans for us are always for our good and His glory.
Let us pray:
Prayer:
Almighty God, we thank You for the truth that You are sovereign over all creation. We acknowledge that You are the Creator, and we are the clay. Help us to trust in Your plans for our lives, knowing that You call and equip us for the tasks You set before us. Teach us to submit to Your will and to walk humbly in Your ways. May we find our strength in You alone, knowing that You are the One who goes before us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
