Scripture Reading: Joshua 6:12-20
Sermon Title: The Power of Obedience
Preacher: Venerable Dr. Jeffery Anyeneh
On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. When the priests sounded the trumpet blast the seventh time around, Joshua commanded the army, ‘Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!’ The city and all that is in it are to be devoted to the Lord.
When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.
Message
The story of the fall of Jericho is a powerful reminder of the incredible power of obedience to God. The Israelites had been circling the city for seven days, following God’s instructions to the letter. They had marched around the city once a day, with seven priests blowing trumpets and the army following behind. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times, and then, at God’s command, they shouted a great shout. And the walls of Jericho fell flat.
This miraculous event was not a result of the Israelites’ strength or abilities. It was a direct result of their obedience to God’s word. When they followed God’s instructions, even though they may have seemed strange or difficult, they experienced the incredible power of God at work in their lives.
The same is true for us today. When we are obedient to God’s word, even when it’s challenging or doesn’t make sense to us, we can experience the incredible power of God at work in our lives. We may not see immediate results, but we can be confident that God is working behind the scenes to bring about His will in our lives.
So what does it mean to be obedient to God in our daily lives? It means seeking to know His will for our lives through prayer and Bible study. It means submitting our desires and plans to His will. It means following His guidance even when it’s difficult or uncomfortable.
When we are obedient to God, we can experience the incredible power of His love, grace, and mercy at work in our lives. We can overcome challenges that seem impossible. We can find peace and joy even in difficult circumstances.
In conclusion, let us remember the powerful story of the fall of Jericho. It is a reminder of the incredible power of obedience to God. When we follow His instructions, even when they seem strange or difficult, we can experience the incredible power of God at work in our lives. Let us commit ourselves to obeying God’s word in all areas of our lives, trusting that He will lead us on a path of righteousness and peace.
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift His countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.
