Text: Proverbs 25:11-22

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters…” (Proverbs 25:11-13, KJV).

Proverbs 25:11-22 highlights the power and importance of wise, timely words. Solomon compares words spoken at the right moment to valuable objects like “apples of gold in pictures of silver.” These words can build up or tear down, making it crucial for us to speak with discernment and love. This passage encourages us to reflect God’s wisdom in our speech, using our words to heal and uplift those around us.

The text also emphasizes the importance of correction and the beauty of receiving it with humility. Just as fine jewelry enhances one’s appearance, wise correction improves a person’s character. A teachable spirit is essential for growth, and we are reminded to embrace correction when offered, as well as to give it with love and wisdom. Humility and openness to learning are marks of true wisdom.

Faithfulness in service is another key theme in this passage. Solomon likens a faithful servant to a refreshing drink during harvest, highlighting the value of reliability and trustworthiness. In contrast, those who boast without delivering on their promises are like clouds without rain, promising much but offering little. God values integrity and calls us to be faithful in all areas of life.

Finally, the passage teaches the radical love of caring for our enemies. Instead of seeking revenge, we are called to overcome evil with good by serving those who wrong us. Acts of kindness can lead to repentance and transformation, allowing God to work in the hearts of others. This type of love reflects the nature of Christ and challenges us to live counter-culturally, trusting in God’s reward.
